The Tutor Trust & Impetus

Impetus’ invaluable expertise is helping us get the best tuition to the pupils who need it the most and to develop a solid plan for growth so that we can reach more of them.

– Abigail Shapiro and Nick Bent, Co-founders, The Tutor Trust

The need: Good GCSE grades are gateway qualifications for further study and fulfilling work. But only 40% of young people on free school meals pass their English and maths GCSEs, compared with 68% of all other pupils.

Our charity partner: The Tutor Trust provides small group tuition for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in primary and secondary schools in the north of England. The tutors work closely with pupils to improve their confidence and grades in key subjects. A randomised control trial, funded by the Education Endowment Foundation, found that primary school children who received tutoring from Tutor Trust made three months’ additional progress in maths.

Our impact: Impetus is helping The Tutor Trust to improve the exam results of more pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. And with the Education Endowment Foundation, we’re supporting them to develop a three-year plan for growth into more schools in the north of England.
